What?....

Jett and Riley went to parent teacher conference last night and I have been irritated ever since, what do you think? He has always done really well in math but the teacher says he is falling behind so Jett proceeds to tell her how we have been doing his homework and obviously we are way off. This is the way Riley is being taught to do subtraction and addition problems...the only word I can find right now is WHAT?

Just so you know this is what the teacher wrote out on the back of the paper, I am not making it up.

So I get the addition one, but the subtraction one has me thrown for a loop....

Whatever happened to

6+5 is 11 so carry the 1...you get the idea. That is SUPER CONFUSING! I have no idea how an 8 year old is even supposed to get that...it took me a few minutes to even pick up on it & the subtraction...wow! That's not even a legit method of doing math if you ask me...I hope it gets better!

WOW FREAKIN WOW! I would like to have some words with that teacher. I'm sorry that's wrong so wrong I would've laughed in her face not to be mean, but that is ridiculous. Riley is NOT falling behind his teacher is from another planet.

Thanks for your comments. I am not willing to let Riley fall behind because of some experiment.

Ummm, yeah...that is not any form of addition or subtraction that I've ever seen! And I've gone through four 8-year olds now! I would be for calling the principal to discuss the curriculum!

The type of math is a representation of how our minds figure out a problem. Its based on the idea of how our mind processes large numbers compared to smaller numbers. Constructively we can process 10's 5's and multiples of those numbers in an instant. That rule is being applied with the subtraction also. It's along the same line of speed reading. In speed reading a reader only focuses attention on Verbs. I remember learning about this kind of Math, the next subject we learned was about MATRICIES in my AP Math class in High School!

That is a weird way to do math. I was also thinking, "WHAT?" Whose the teacher so I can request my kids don't have them? ;)

What the h? It's amazing that I graduated from high school.
I love the letter about the cell phone. I can't believe you have a kid old enough to be baptized. I remember your baptism like it was yesterday! When did we get old?

Um - WOW!! If this is the new way they teach 2nd grade math I would be falling behind too. Poor kid!! Ellie, who as you know is the same age, is not learning this way. That is CRAZINESS!!

I'm totally confused!! When Riley figures it out maybe he could tutor me! I worry about the day Grace comes home with math that's too confusing for me. I'm sure it will be in the next year or 2, math is not my thing!!

Beautiful pics of little Kamryn, I can't believe I haven't met her yet. Let's meet at the park sometime soon.
